SHE shot to fame after winning Love Island but Amber Davies admits she would not want to appear on the reality show now because it has become too “vicious”.
Amber, 25, won series three of the hit ITV2 dating show in 2017 with ex-boyfriend Kem Cetinay, 25, but she has warned that new contestants will need a “thick skin” because of the abuse they may face on social media.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun On Sunday, Amber, who has gone on to have a successful career as a singer, dancer and actress, said: “When I did it five years ago it wasn’t as vicious as it is now — the hate online that they all get, it’s savage.
“I’m so glad I did it when I did. I was only 20 when I won, and when I look back I think, ‘Wow, I was really strong’. The new contestants need to have a good support system and a really thick skin.”
The Welsh-speaking beauty, from Denbigh, North Wales, moved to London at 16 after gaining a scholarship to train at the Urdang Academy drama school.
She graduated three years later but struggled to realise her dream of working in London’s West End because she looked so young and was limited as to what roles she could audition for.
Amber said: “I’m 25 now and still look so young, but at 19 I looked like a child, and that made it really difficult for me.
Love Island got in touch via Instagram. It was a risk, but as I had nothing else I did it. I know I went on to win the show, and am still the youngest ever winner, but I missed performing so much.
“I’ve performed my whole life, it was second nature to me.
“I missed that adrenalin, I missed that ‘family’ feeling from being in a cast, the endorphins that you get from a live audience, and was like, ‘Get me back on stage’.”
Following her show victory reality TV bosses offered her big money for her return.
But she turned them all down so she could concentrate on her musical theatre career. A year later she landed her dream job in Dolly Parton’s hit musical 9 To 5.
She is now headlining her own cabaret show, which opened at the Proud theatre in central London on Wednesday night.
And Amber could not be happier — after also finding love during lockdown with businessman Nick Kyriacou, 29. She split from her telly Lover Kem after five months.
Amber has also been alcohol free for the past six months — admitting that it was making her miserable.
She said: “I couldn’t just have a casual couple of drinks. If I had one drink I was out until 3am. It wasn’t good for me.
“When I was younger it was so much fun but now that I’m getting older it was causing me more misery than it was worth, because I’d be feeling so awful after a night out.
“It was becoming a distraction, so I sat down with my boyfriend and told him I wanted to cut it out.
“He’s not a big drinker and was so supportive.

“All I’ve seen over the past six months is the benefits of not drinking. My mental health is the best it’s ever been, I’m sleeping better, my skin is better.
“And our relationship has come on leaps and bounds. It really is the best thing I’ve ever done.” The loved-up couple, who were introduced by a mutual friend in 2020, have just returned from the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean, where Amber kept asking Nick if he was going to propose.
She revealed: “We had a few teething problems at the start of our relationship, but who doesn’t?
“He’s so driven, so hardworking. He has got me on the best track of my life and wants me to be the best version of myself.
“He’s also so hot! He’s my future baby daddy. I was asking him every single day on holiday if he was going to propose. It’s 100 per cent on the cards. We’ve been together for nearly two years. He is ‘The One’.
“We’re buying a property in Surrey, so I’m moving from Essex.
“It’s all happening for me. I feel like I’m in a transitional stage in my life and I’m so excited.”
Amber appeared in Cabaret All Stars last week, to rave reviews. She is the ultra-glam host of an action-packed live show featuring acrobats, firebreathers and burlesque beauties.
She said: “When they approached me to do it I thought, ‘This is perfect’. I’m used to big theatrical audiences, the big stage, playing a character, so this is really different, because it’s just me on stage.
“And for the audience it’s a lot more immersive, a lot more personal. I have never done anything like that before but I’d always wanted to. It’s a celebration of strong women. I didn’t want it to be all sex and swearing, I wanted it to be old-school glamour and celebrating women.
“The outfits are incredible. There are feathers and tassels and lots of rhinestones.”
Amber explained that there is fire in one scene during a dance and more than just a splash of water in another, when she performs a song.
“We are going to drench the stage!” she said, adding that she pushed hard for these “special” effects to be included for maximum impact.
“I wanted it to exceed everyone’s expectations,” she added.
The production runs until late May and afterwards Amber wants to do another musical.
Despite all her experience of treading the boards Amber is the first to admit that she still gets nervous, especially if friends and family are there to support her.
She said: “I always find that if I know someone who is watching I get more nervous.
“I get butterflies, but I love that butterflies feeling.
“You always feel it on opening night. It’s what reminds me that I care. I’ve still got a lot to learn.
“Someone once told me, ‘Just know that this is the first time and the last time that you’ll ever do this for the first time. You only get to do your opening night for that show that one night, so enjoy it’.

“That really made me think.
“So whenever I’m opening a new show that’s what I always think of, it’s the first and last time I’ll ever do it for the first time.”
Kem and Amber’s relationship was short-lived after they left the Love Island villa, yet during that time the couple had talked about their plans to get married and have babies. They spoke at length about their future together, saying they were planning to have three weddings.
And even though they never set a date Kem — who is of Turkish and Cypriot descent — said the weddings would take place over a week in Essex, Wales and Cyprus.
But it was all over in December 2017, with the couple saying: “With sadness, we’ve decided to separate. Our schedules made it difficult. We’ll remain good friends.”
While working on her dream hit musical 9 To 5 she remained single after Dolly Parton told her: “Career first, men can wait for you.”
Kem, 25, has now forged his own career in entertainment as a TV presenter, personality and entrepreneur. Given her thoughts about how tough modern reality TV can be, Amber is not too keen to appear in another show of that type just yet, though she reveals there is one exception that could get her back on the box.
She added: “My dream TV show would be Strictly Come Dancing. Other than that I wouldn’t want to do another reality show, Love Island was enough.
“How can you do another reality show after you won Love Island? It’s a peak.
“But now I want to be recognised for my singing, acting and dancing. I don’t regret taking part but I’ve had to work really hard to mute the Love Island bubble.”
