Julia Fox makes her runway debut in the New York-based designer’s dancefloor-ready collection
At LaQuan Smith’s Fall/Winter 2022 presentation, excitement swirled as guests gathered into the runway’s three separate rooms at Manhattan’s oldest club, the Downtown Association. Smith took over the entire club occupying the first floor for an initial cocktail party and then inviting guests to the upstairs level for the runway show. The setup of the presentation felt intimate and inviting with various rooms that models walked through in lieu of one ongoing runway.
The evening’s presentation kicked off as stillness fell over the room with a heavy moment of silence dedicated to the late Editor André Leon Talley. As the lights went up and the music began, pop culture’s woman-of-the-moment Julia Fox strutted down the runway in a sultry body-hugging cutout gown that gave a whole new meaning to the beloved “Revenge Dress” moment.
The collection as a whole celebrated a return to dressing up and the forgotten glamour of New York Fashion Week. Micro minis, lurex, and Bimbocore Ushanka mink hats all channeled a vision of modern clubwear for the upcoming season. Of course, it wouldn’t be a LaQuan Smith show without turning up the sex appeal. Low cuts and slinky silhouettes throughout the collection were reminiscent of trends from bygone decades: 2000s-era micro mini skirts, ’80s bodysuits showcasing the pelvis, and even ’60s deep-cut halter necks. Model Amelia Hamlin carried out an ultra-low-cut sequin two piece look with loads of sex appeal that would make even the most devoted of high-waisted lovers want to try out the micro mini trend.
The color palette was filled with vibrant tones to standout on the dancefloor while incorporating some neutral staples so there’s a little something for everyone. Euphoria Actress Chloe Cherry stood out on the catwalk in a bold lilac mink-trimmed knit coat and matching high-waisted undies while the following look was a little black dress balancing out Smith’s palette. The final look featured Model Frida Aasen in an eye-catching sheer red bodysuit and matching tulle mermaid skirt that practically screamed Rihanna’s name.
Since his start, the Queens-born designer has become one of the biggest names and hottest invites of New York Fashion Week. In his Fall/Winter 2022 collection, Smith proves once again that a LaQuan Smith party isn’t one to miss.
